(In progress)
Rule #1:
No Power Playing!
This means you can’t do something that is not feasible in real life.
For an example, lets say you just went to visit a dragons cave where you hid the orb of thunder for safe keeping. You find the dragon at home. This is power playing:
You whip out your sword and with a mighty cry charge forward, the dragon blasts fire at me but I jump to the side, then whirl and chop the dragon’s head off. I grab the orb and mount my trusty horse, and we ride off into the sunset, victor of yet another battle.
It can be more subtle then that, but this is what I consider power play. Why?
1. Since when was a horse, hard wired to run from plastic grocery bags, willing to stand before a huge meat eating dragon with out batting an eye?
2. If you are fast enough to leap aside from a jet of flames, the dragon is probably fast enough to turn its head and follow you. Or in the very least willing to jerk its head out of the way. I think that about does it…
Here is a way you could achieve the same thing with out power playing:
Sam Wimbelton rode his trusty horse up to the dragons cave and prepared to dismount, confident that he would only be a minute. After all the thunder orb was at the very front of the cave, and it had been abandoned for years! He lifted his leg over the horses back to dismount and the horse promptly shies, directly into his planted leg. Falling heavily back into the saddle, Sam made a frantic grab at the horses mane as his normally calm mount begins rearing and plunging. Sam sits back and the horse wildly backs up about 30 feet before stamping and trying to jerk to the left or right to turn around. Looking to see what it is, Sam finally notices why the horse is so upset.
The dragons cave was not abandoned after all! A giant dragons head was poking itself out of the cave, it sniffed the air, one sleepy eye taking Sam in as mere scenery. Then widens at it realizes what it really is. Sam swallows, deciding maybe he didn’t need that orb as bad as he thought he did, spun the horse around and galloped down to the village!
The dragon, seeing its prey escaping, crawls out, still a bit sluggish from the cool morning air. The steep slope that had made it a requirement for Sam to get off the horse, was quickly becoming a blessing. It required the dragon to have to leave a bit more slowly so he could squeeze his wings out to follow the horse.
By the time they hit the bottom of the mountain, despite the horses panic driven muscles taking him far faster then normal, the dragon had made it out of the cave and was already in flight, making good time, with no rough trail to impede it.
Sam pulls the horses head toward the carpenter shop, trying not to jerk from fear. He wipes sweat from his face, and shivers, then brightens as he spies a lance leaning against the carpenter shop. He reaches out and grabs it, feeling mildly glad to have some kind of weapon.
He stops his horse and tries to turn it around. The horse jerks its head and makes little half rears, in answer to the small kicks you make to get him to go forward. You are after all, asking him to do exactly what he doesn’t want to do, head BACK! Then the horse spies something and runs for it. Its his stable…with two large open ends…
Sam whirls his horse sideways, trying to get it to stop, but the horse instead side passes, throwing its head up. Sam hears the loud thud of a landing and whirls toward the left. The dragon growls a little bit and crawls forward. “EEEEEEEEYAH!” Sam shouts back and encourages him with all his might towards the dragon. It spies an exit between the dragons legs as the dragon lowers its head to stick into the building, and aims for it. Sam holds the lance up and aim it directly at the dragons open mouth as it sucks in breath quickly to blow fire into the place.
The lance shoves down the dragons throat, causing the fire to be trapped inside. With hardly a croak, the dragon drops silently.
Sam slumps against the horses neck, and notices the horse is trembling. That’s fine, Sam is too.
Rule #2: No swearing.
If you swear inside this board, I will happily and with out guilt modify the swear words into something less harmless.
Rule #3: No sexual content.
This may be a fantasy, but that does not mean you can give an anatomy lesson to 13 year olds. Got it?
